Allen has been incarcerated for longer than his stepdaughter Zion has been alive, but they've found common ground and connection through education. Allen is enrolled in California's only face-to-face Bachelor's degree program for incarcerated individuals through Cal State at Lancaster Prison in Los Angeles County. Zion is getting ready to start her freshman year at Cal State LA's main campus in the Fall.

Paws For Life at California State Prison-Los Angeles County

California State Prison-Los Angeles County (LAC) has started a Paws For Life dog-training program.

In partnership with Karma Rescue, Paws for Life provides valuable training experience to the inmates participating in the program. The program provides an opportunity for inmates to contribute to society by giving the dogs the skills needed for a successful placement into permanent homes.
Paws For Life brings rescued shelter dogs to live full-time with inmates. Over a 12-week cycle, inmates will learn from Karma trainers how to train the rescue dogs for Canine Good Citizen certification. Once a dog earns this designation, the chance for successful adoption increases — as does Karma Rescue's ability to rescue another shelter animal in its place.

The 14 men selected to train the rescue dogs went through a rigorous application process that included interviews and a written essay. "Paws For Life would give me the opportunity to do something for someone else, to give back to a society I cheated," wrote one participant
